You've made the decision to learn how to start a blog from scratch, but you have so many questions.
You know you want to craft a beautiful, money-making blog of your dreams - but something has always stopped you.
You're likely letting fear either stop you from starting entirely, or you've allowed it to slow you down.
I've been there!
I remember the day I decided I was going to start a blog quite vividly.
It was downright terrifying! I didn't have a clue how to start a blog. Let alone do any of the technical stuff that came along with it. I didn't know anything about picking a niche, target audiences, blogging platforms, or themes.
I was learning how to start a blog from scratch. Just like you.
Before I launched my blog, I spent numerous hours researching everything blogging. Which seemed to never end. I didn't have someone there to help me or point me in the right direction either.
But, finally - after all of those hours I spent during a 3-week period - my blog was ready to go!
I can't tell you how many times I wanted to give up. But something inside told me to keep on going. And am I ever glad I didn't throw in the towel right there and then.
I wouldn't have the thriving, 7-figure a year business I know have and love.
My blog allows me the freedom to create my own hours, and create my own schedule. Most bloggers only work an average of 5-hours per day! Which sure beats working 8-12 hours in most corporate jobs.
Starting a blog can do the same thing for you. No matter what niche you're in, or how much money you have to initially invest in your blog - you can make it happen.
Just as I did - and thousands of other bloggers are doing right now. While some bloggers never make a dime, there are more and more bloggers learning the secret sauce, and they're making the big bucks.
But let's be real.
It took me ages to create my blog because I didn't know what I was doing. Which is such a common theme among new bloggers.
This is why I created this step-by-step guide to help walk you through every step of the process.
Are you ready to jump head first, and start a profitable blog? Let's dive in!
Below, I have included my discounted affiliate pricing that I personally negotiated with Bluehost - to save you some money. I only promote products and/or services that I use, love, and trust.
Decide on Your Niche and Target Audience
When you start your blog, the first things on your list should always be laying the foundation. Without a clear and concise niche and a group of targeted people you'll craft content for - your blog may not last very long.
Your niche is basically the topic you choose to write about. You can have one core niche, such as social media marketing. Where you only write about social media marketing topics.
Or, you can pick a core niche, say blogging - and break it down into sub-categories like email marketing, blogging basics, social media marketing, etc.
Either way, you need to hone in on a niche before you actually start your blog - to ensure you're able to earn money.
Here Are a Quick Few Questions to Ask Before You Decide on a Niche:
Your Target Audience
These are your people.
They'll become your raving fans if you tailor your content and your opt-in freebies well enough.
And when you have relevant paid products or services to sell?
These will be the people first in line.
All the more reason to nurture your target audience. But before you can do that, you need to hone in on a specific group of people.
Let's stick with the example of the "blogging" niche. Say you want to start a blog about blogging.
Ask Yourself These Questions:
Above all - your blog should be written for your audience, not for yourself.
People visit blogs to get information on topics they're interested in. So if you're not delivering relevant and useful value - your blog's going to sink, fast.
I suggest spending some time brainstorming your niche, your sub-categories for your niche (what topics you'll write about), and spend a significant chunk of time honing in on a specific target audience.
If you wanted to gear your blog towards women, you could make that even more specific by saying "moms". Then, take it a step further and figure out exactly what kind of moms.
Moms who've left the 9-5 corporate world?
Moms with disabled children?
Maybe, stay-at-home moms who are aged 25-40 and have young children?
Whatever you choose, see if it can possibly get any more specific. There's always a market for a place on the web for your tribe. You just need to find them.
Choose a Blogging Platform
When it comes to choosing a blogging platform, there are loads of options out there. But they're far from equal.
If you're serious about wanting to turn your blog into a money-making machine, there really is only one right answer:
There is the free, WordPress.com. Which comes with hardly any features and a boatload of restrictions. Plus, you have to pay hundreds of dollars to get even half of the features, functionality, and customizability that self-hosted WordPress.ORG comes with.
Or you can skip that headache, like most bloggers, business owners, and even large brands do - and go for the best of the best.
WordPress runs 30% of the world's websites. Which in the big picture, is a whole lot of websites!
Not to mention, self-hosted WordPress comes with such an incredible community of public forums for support, Facebook groups, and thousands of tutorials and YouTube videos for any question you may have.
It's free. You just have to pay for web hosting - which is typically a few dollars per month!
Self-hosted WordPress isn't comparable. Which is why we'll be going with for the sake of this tutorial.
Web Hosting: The Most Important Decision You Will Make
Choosing the right web hosting provider is imperative to the success of your blog and business.
After trying out different hosting providers, I found that Bluehost was the best because they offer affordable hosting and their customer support is outstanding.
Bluehost is one of the top web hosting companies in 2018 and you can start your own blog with them for as low as $2.75 a month (this low price is through my affiliate link only).
Another bonus for using my discounted lin - you will get your domain for free if you purchase a 12 month or longer hosting plan (a $15 value).
I highly recommend signing up for the 12-month hosting plan through Bluehost. It’s affordable and you can save a lot of money by signing up for at least 12 months.
If you want a better deal, the best value would be purchasing a 36-month plan, as your monthly rate is much lower in the long run.

How to Start a WordPress Blog on Bluehost
1. Register Your Domain Name
You can click here to purchase a domain name and create a blog, then continue to follow these simple below.
Now's the fun part!
What do you want your blog's name/domain name to be?
A domain name is your blog’s URL address, such as “MyEssentialOilBlog.com” or this blog, “MadeWithOils.com.” Since you chose Bluehost as your host, your domain name is free.
You’ll want to pick a name that’s easy to remember, describes your blog perfectly, and is catchy.
If your blog will specifically be about essential oils, for example, you’ll probably want to include “oils” or “essential oils” in the domain name rather than just a generic name.
This will help for SEO purposes so you're more likely to get found in search engines like Google.
Once you’ve thought of your name, enter it into the box below shown on the screenshot to make sure it’s available. If it’s not, keep brainstorming.
Once you’ve picked your domain name, you’ll then be taken to the “Package Information” page. Which allows you to pick and choose what features you want.
None of the additional charges are necessary, so feel free to uncheck all of those boxes.
The only one you might want to keep is the “Domain Privacy Protection” to shield your personal information from the public:
2. Install WordPress on Bluehost.
Once you’ve registered and paid with Bluehost, it’s time to install WordPress.
Most websites and blogs run on WordPress since it’s easy to install, easy-to-use, and simple to customize.
Next, you'll need to login to your Bluehost account and find the Website Builders section. Scroll down and click on the “WordPress” logo:
On the next page, click the “Install” button:
Select the correct domain name (the one you just registered) and leave the box next to it blank:
Now just check the box to say that you’ve read the terms and conditions - and click the “Install Now” button.
A Few Quick Crucial Things Left to do/Remember:
Congrats! That’s it. You are now the proud owner of your WordPress website!
Choosing a WordPress Theme
Now that the hard work is finished - it’s time to play around with WordPress and learn the ins and outs of getting your blog started.
Under “Appearance” you can select “Themes” and look at the free themes they offer.
You can play around with this as you don’t have to keep the first theme you choose.
Eventually, as a serious blogger wanting to look professional, you'll more than likely want to pay for a theme.
If you are looking for a premium theme, I highly recommend the framework this website runs on:
Genesis Framework – This is the same framework we are using here at Made With Oils. This offers a variety of different child themes to select from and all themes are responsive and mobile friendly. Google loves these!
Another great alternative that has a visual drag and drop (in real time), and more features than you could ever imagine, is The Divi Theme. It's user-friendly and perfect for new or expert bloggers.
