Hair loss is something that many of us experience, especially as we get older.

Many people think that losing your hair is an issue that only affects men, but it is not something that only affects one sex, it can easily happen to anyone.

You may not be bald or have hair that is missing from your head that is noticeable, but maybe you have noticed a bit more hair in the drain when you take a shower.

Hair loss can be subtle, and before you know it, your hair will be so thin that it will not stay in a hair tie without making it tighter.

Did you know that tightening your hair tie can increase the rate that you are losing your hair?

I have found that there are some essential oils on the market that provide a natural way to thicken your hair from the root.

These oils are capable of stimulating your scalp so that more hair grows to replace the hair that you lost.

These oils will also strengthen your hair so that it does not break as easily. Breakage is an issue that many people with long hair experience.

With the right essential oils, you can strengthen the hair that you already have and encourage new hair growth.

Sometimes hair loss occurs because of a medical condition.

When this happens, the loss of your hair can be embarrassing, it can make you feel self-conscious, and it can make you feel like you need to wear a hat all of the time.

Fortunately, there are natural remedies that you can use to help increase your hair growth.

In this guide, we are going to explore some of the ways to help encourage hair growth, the benefits of using essential oils for hair growth, and some recipes that you can make to use on your scalp.

How to Achieve Quick Hair Grow

Hair does not grow overnight, but there are some things that you can do to encourage growth.

Some of the things that are going to be great for improving your hair growth include:

  •    Trim your hair – Split ends can cause breakage, and trimming your hair will help prevent split ends and promote growth.
  •     Condition your hair – If you color or heat your hair, it will damage it. The strands will become thin, which can lead to breakage. Conditioning your hair will help keep it healthy so that it can grow.
  •     Consider supplements – Your hair needs certain minerals to grow and create new hair, so if your diet is lacking these minerals, try adding a supplement to your regiment.
  • Smile
Apply oils – This can help revitalize your hair and encourage it to grow. This is where essential oil comes in and gives you a natural way to encourage hair growth.

How to Use Essential Oils for Hair Growth

How to use Essential Oils to Grow Hair

There are quite a few ways that you can apply essential oils to your hair. This is concentrated oil, so you are not going to want to put the oil directly on your scalp.

Instead, you can:

  •     Make a conditioner – To do this, you will simply need to combine the essential oil that you are using with a carrier oil like coconut oil. Apply the conditioner to your hair, let it sit for an hour or more, and then rinse it.
  •     Create a spray – Combine essential oil and aloe vera in a spray bottle that you can use to mist your hair throughout the day. Be aware that citrus essential oils will not work for this application if you are going outdoors.
  •     Enhance your shampoo – Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to your shampoo so that it gets applied to your hair as you lather.
  • Eye Dropper
Create a pomade – By combining melted beeswax, a carrier oil, and essential oils, you can create a tool that can promote hair growth as you style your hair.

Safety First

Before you begin using essential oils to treat your hair, it is important to remember a few things.

These are highly concentrated, which means that you do not want to apply them to your skin without a carrier oil or some type of dilution.

According to a study performed by the Tisserand Institute, undiluted essential oils can cause skin irritations, allergic reactions, and even chemical burns in some cases.

They can also be very dangerous if they get into your eyes as you are applying the oils to your hair, so be careful.

If you do get the oils in your eye, make sure that you rinse your eye out immediately with cold water.

Also, citrus oils should not be used if you are planning on being in the sun all day because these oils are phototoxic, and can cause you to have a reaction on your skin just by being outside in the sun.

If you experience phototoxicity, your skin can become red, inflamed, irritated, and even blister.

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, this reaction can cause long-term damage to your skin, which can be seen for 20 years after the product has been removed from your skin.

Grow Back Your Hair With These 10 Oils

There are quite a few natural remedies that you can try when it comes to essential oils for hair growth.

After researching the essential oils that are great for hair growth, we have put together a list of the top 10 for you to consider.

Promote Tranquil Growth with Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender Oil for Hair Growth

Lavender essential oil is an oil that has a lot of antimicrobial properties that can help fight any bacterial growth that you may have on your scalp.

It is also a very calming essential oil, so if you are losing your hair from stress, this may be a way to soothe your body and release some stress.

In fact, according to this study, the number of hair follicles on a person increased after using lavender essential oil on their scalp. The roots of each hair also grew stronger, which means that less hair loss would result.

Remove the Itch with Rosemary Essential Oil

Rosemary Oil for Hair Growth

Rosemary essential oil is another proven way to stimulate hair growth. In this study, this essential oil was compared to a more conventional treatment that is said to promote hair growth, and it had very similar results.

Subjects were studied for six months, and after that period of time, significant new hair was seen on all of the study participants.

The rosemary essential oil was also proven to be an effective treatment for dandruff and dry, itchy scalps.

If you are looking to thicken your hair, then this is a great essential oil to use on your hair.

Mix a few drops with olive oil, and then massage it in your scalp and allow it to sit for about four hours before washing it out.

Improve Scalp Circulation with Thyme Essential Oil

Thyme Oil for Hair Growth

Thyme is considered to be one of the best essential oils for hair because it not only promotes growth, it does it by improving the blood circulation in your scalp, which can be beneficial to your heart and circulatory system as well.

If your hair is thinning, thyme essential oil will help thicken your hair and make it shinier and healthier than it has been for many years.

The essential oil has antibacterial properties that will also help you fight dandruff and the scalp itch that is caused by this dry skin condition.

Stimulate Your Follicles with Tea Tree Essential Oil

Tea Tree Oil for Hair Growth

Tea tree essential oil can be a great addition to any shampoo that you create because it is a great cleaning agent that will help clean out your hair follicles so that new hair can grow.

This will also help improve the health of your hair because it has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties.

Tea tree essential oil is also a great way to treat damaged skin, so if your scalp is dry or extra oily, it can help bring balance to your scalp and make it healthy again.

Itch and inflammation will also decrease with constant use, which is why this is a great essential oil to use when you need to get rid of dandruff or even head lice.

In this study, tea tree essential oil was compared to minoxidil, which is a topical treatment that is often used for hair loss.

As it turns out, the tree oil was actually more successful at promoting hair growth during the 32 weeks when the study took place.

Improve Thinning Hair with Cedarwood Essential Oil

Cedarwood Oil for Hair Growth

If you are looking for an essential oil that has more of a robust, manly scent to help stimulate hair growth, then cedarwood essential oil is going to be a great option for you to consider.

This woody smelling oil has antibacterial and anti-fungal properties that can help balance the oil-producing glands in your scalp to reduce the amount of hair loss that you are experiencing.

This will help to increase the circulation in your scalp so that new hair can grow.

A study was conducted in Scotland that tested the effectiveness of cedarwood essential oil when it comes to hair loss, and after seven months of using the product, 44 percent of the patients showed improved hair growth.

Strengthen Your Hair with Clary Sage Essential Oil

One of the main reasons that many people experience hair loss and breakage is because they have too much stress in their lives.

Clary sage essential oil is a natural remedy that can help decrease the stress that you are feeling and help you relax.

When you relax, your hormones will become more balanced, which means that the oil from your scalp will regulate as well.

This essential oil can be added to any shampoo, but it can also be rubbed on the bottom of your feet or on your temples to help you relax.

Boost Your Mood and Hair Thickness with Peppermint Essential Oil

Peppermint Oil for Hair Growth

Peppermint essential oil is a very effective natural remedy that you can use for hair growth.

It works by promoting circulation in your scalp, so when you apply it, you may feel a slight cooling sensation that may even tingle a bit, especially if you use it in massage oil instead of in your shampoo or conditioner.

In this study, the use of peppermint essential oil for a period of four weeks increased dermal thickness, follicle depth, and overall hair growth.

In addition to hair growth, this is an essential oil that can help ease headaches, provide you with energy, and boost your overall mood.

Reduce Scalp Oils with Lemon Essential Oil

Lemon Oil for Hair Growth

Lemon essential oil is a great option when it comes to promoting hair growth, but this is not something that can be used all of the time.

As mentioned above, citrus essential oils can cause something called phototoxicity, which can irritate your scalp when you are exposed to a lot of sun.

Since this can be an issue, you will want to use this essential oil at night, when you will be able to wash it out of your hair before the sun comes up with ease.

Also, make sure to keep the concentration under two percent so that it washes out of your hair without issue.

Increase Your Hair's Shine with Eucalyptus Essential Oil

Eucalyptus Oil for Hair Growth

Eucalyptus essential oil is a sweet smelling oil that is derived from the leaves of the eucalyptus plant.

It has anti-fungal, antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory properties, which makes it a great tool to promote hair growth.

The oil works by improving the circulation in your scalp, which allows the hair follicles to get the nutrients that they need to grow.

This oil adds a natural shine to your hair so that it looks healthier. This essential oil will also help treat dandruff and other scalp issues; it will also kill head lice in as little as a two hour period.

Lighten Your Hair with Chamomile Essential Oil

If you dye your hair, but you are having trouble with hair loss because of the damage that it is causing, then chamomile essential oil is worth trying.

It will help heal your hair, which will make it soft and shiny, but it will also promote new growth.

Chamomile essential oil is a natural way to lighten your hair without using chemicals like bleach and formaldehyde, which will damage your hair quite a bit if hair dye products containing these ingredients are used on a regular basis.

If you are looking for more than a slight color change, you can sit in the sun with a paste mixture of chamomile essential oils, salt, and baking soda.

Essential Oil Blends & Recipes You Can Make

Hair Growth Mask Treatment

You will need:

  • An egg
  • One teaspoon of coconut oil
  • 10 drops of lemon essential oil

Crack the egg in a mixing bowl, and then whisk it with the coconut oil and the lemon essential oil. If you have long hair, you may need to use two eggs for the mask.

Apply the mask to your hair, making sure that it is dry, then clip it up and cover it with a shower cap. After seven minutes, you can rinse the mask from your hair with cold water.

When the mask is removed, wash your hair with cold water and shampoo.

Hot Oil Treatment

You will need:

  • Two tablespoons of coconut oil
  • Three drops of rosemary essential oil
  • Three drops of thyme essential oil
  • Three drops of lavender essential oil
  • Three drops of cedarwood essential oil

Start by melting the coconut oil in a small pan without allowing it to boil.

When the coconut oil has melted completely, add in the rosemary essential oil, the thyme essential oil, the lavender essential oil, and the cedarwood essential oil.

When the oil is mixed and is cool enough to handle, carefully pour the oil over your scalp, pin up your hair, and cover it with a shower cap. After two hours have passed, wash your hair.

Overnight Treatment for Deep Penetration

You will need:

  • Two tablespoons of coconut oil
  • Five drops of rosemary essential oil
  • Two drops of peppermint essential oil
  • One teaspoon of olive oil

Combine all of the oils and apply the mixture to your scalp. Cover your hair with a shower cap, and wait until morning to wash the treatment out of your hair.

Shampoo Treatment

You will need:

  • ¼ of a cup of castile soap (liquid)
  • One teaspoon of coconut oil (liquid)
  • Seven drops of rosemary essential oil
  • Four drops of lavender essential oil

Combine all of the ingredients in a soap dispenser. When you combine the ingredients, make sure that you gently stir them or swirl them together in the bottle because if you shake the dispenser to combine the ingredients, you will have a lot of bubbles on your hands.

Use this mixture in place of your regular soap for a while so that it can nourish your scalp and help encourage your hair to grow.

Pomade Treatment

You will need:

  • ¾ of a cup of beeswax
  • One cup of Shea butter
  • One cup of jojoba oil
  • 60 drops of rosemary essential oils
  • 40 drops of lime or lemon essential oil
  • 20 drops of vanilla essential oil

When making this pomade, you will need to start by melting the solids. The best way to melt the Shea butter and the beeswax is to use a double boiler, but if you do not have one, then you can place a bowl over a saucepan for a makeshift double boiler.

Once the Shea butter and the beeswax have melted, mix in the jojoba oil and the essential oils. Allow the mixture to cool, and then scoop it into jars so that you can use the mixture to style your hair.

Other Noteworthy Benefits

These essential oil blends are not only great for promoting hair growth, but they can also thicken your hair. This is primarily because the essential oils stimulate your hair follicles.

This will increase the circulation in your scalp and help new hair grow as well. Certain essential oils can benefit your hair in different ways.

For example, peppermint essential oil can help get rid of greasy hair, while chamomile essential oil can help make your hair a tint lighter without the use of chemicals or bleach.

These essential oils can also help make your hair healthier.

Many people spend money on products that make their hair shiny and smooth, but these products can actually be damaging to your hair.

Essential oils can have the same effects without all of the side effects.

Dandruff is a common result of these products, or it can simply be the result of dead skin on your scalp, but essential oils like lavender and lemongrass can get rid of your dandruff naturally.

Final Thoughts About Essential Oils for hair Growth

As you can see from this list of essential oils, there are quite a few natural options that you can consider when you are trying to promote hair growth.

Just remember that these oils need to be diluted before they are used on your scalp so that they do not irritate your skin.

If you are unsure of which essential oils to use, you can start with one or two oils, and venture out to new ones from there.

When you find a few that you like, try combining them to create a mixture that is even more beneficial for your hair.
